Mona Prakash Mahtani, a native from Hyderabad, Pakistan has just won the 2016 Commonwealth Youth award for excellence in Education.
The award was handed down by the Youth Director Katherine Ellis of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London. The award is well known and is given to young men and women who are under the age of 30 years. This award is a symbol of their significant contribution to the society.
In 2016, Mahtani is the only Pakistani who have won such an award. Around 17 other young individuals from 53 different Commonwealth countries were also selected for the award.
Mahtani recently also received the United Nations Development Programme’s N-Peace Award.
She was awarded for founding Dewan Farm school in her native village. This is a primary school aimed at the minority and poor families. The school has expanded to take on 75 students from the time it was founded.
